Background of the Study

Investigative journalism is critical for uncovering corruption, exposing injustice, and holding power to account. However, practitioners in Bida Local Government Area face numerous ethical challenges, including conflicts of interest, safety risks, and pressure from powerful entities. According to recent studies, investigative journalists operate in environments fraught with ethical dilemmas, where balancing public interest and professional integrity becomes a daily struggle (Ojo et al., 2024; Ibrahim & Musa, 2025). Additionally, limited resources and inadequate legal protections exacerbate the vulnerabilities of investigative reporters, impacting their ability to pursue in-depth reporting. This study explores these ethical challenges in the Bida context, providing insights into strategies for supporting investigative journalism.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite its importance, investigative journalism in Bida faces significant hurdles, including ethical lapses, external interference, and threats to journalists' safety. The lack of clear ethical guidelines and institutional support often leaves practitioners exposed to risks, undermining their ability to perform their watchdog role effectively (Adebayo, 2023; Usman, 2024). This study investigates these issues, aiming to identify solutions that enhance ethical standards and journalist protection.
